Real Local Government Reform Put on the Long Finger....Again

Problem passed to Commission on Taxation

Chambers Ireland’s Ratepayers and Local Government Policy Council has today (22/04/08) questioned the rationale for shunting the issue of financing off the Department’s agenda of Local Government Reform.

Spokesperson for the Council Pauline Dooley said, “Local authorities need a more balanced funding regime. The proposals outlined by the Minister will delay the most needed type of reform – financing – by passing the issue to the Commission for Taxation.”

“It has only been two years since the Indecon Report highlighted the considerable problems in local government funding. Why have these, coupled with those made by upwards of ten reports over numerous decades, not been taken on board?” Dooley said.

“Whilst we welcome the provisions for increased democracy in the current proposals, the existing problems will be passed to new structures and the new Directly Elected Mayors, and will not solve the issues facing Local Authorities”, Dooley concluded.
