Irish Cement is the leading producer of cement in Ireland, with production plants in both Platin and Limerick together employing approximately 350 staff. Since starting operations back in 1938, Irish Cement has continually invested in upgrading its production facilities to provide high quality cements to match the market demands. Recently the company has introduced CEM II lower carbon intensity cements to the market. These ‘green’ cements emit less carbon dioxide and require less energy during production thereby directly contributing to reduced carbon emissions from the plants. CEM II can also significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the projects where it is used.
Operating in Drogheda for over 70 years, Irish Cement Platin has recently commissioned a state of the art €200 million ‘Kiln 3’ project. The new Kiln 3 plant, which is the most modern in Europe, uses up to date technology to ensure efficient cement production. With the current reduced market demand for cement, this new energy efficient plant puts Platin in a good position to operate competitively into the future. In addition to energy efficiency improvements, Kiln 3 has also delivered reductions in greenhouse gases, particulate emissions and lowered the carbon footprint of the plant.
Top priority is given by Irish Cement to the health and safety of its employees. The company also has a strong commitment to being a ‘good neighbour’ in the local community, and has adopted a policy of open communication on environmental performance.
Irish Cement Platin Works, winner of the ‘Best Established Business Award’ in 2008, is very proud to sponsor this Award in 2009.
