Tackling climate change will require extraordinary commitment from us all. At Tesco in Drogheda, we have been working hard to play a positive role and are leading the way in pioneering innovative environmental solutions helping to reduce our environmental impact. For example our new store off the Donore Road has a number of state of the art environmental initiatives.
A state of the art heating and electricity generating system heats the store and provides it with additional electricity. All staff and store room areas are equipped with a motion detection lighting system. Lights in these areas automatically turn off once people leave the immediate vicinity.
Solar sensitive lighting is also used to light the shop floor. During bright periods the lighting system automatically dims brightening up again once it gets darker. We estimated that enough rainwater to fill 6,500 bathtubs has been collected this year alone and used as part of the stores toilet systems.
We are also committed to cutting as much waste as we can and to helping our customers to do the same. Together, we can make the little changes that make a big difference.
Our Environmental Strategy sets us the target of becoming the first Irish retailer to reach 100% recycling of tertiary packaging and store waste. Tesco is a bin-less working environment with over 70% of waste from our stores recycled.
