Benchmarking: Chambers Ireland Responds
Following the publication of today’s (10/01/08) report of the Public Service Benchmarking Body, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive John Dunne said, “Benchmarking was established to replace the previous system of escalating relativity claims across the public sector. While we support the efforts to link public and private sector pay, it has evolved into a one-way system where public service wage levels only increase.”
“Benchmarking is not the primary determinant of public sector pay. We must also take into account general wage increases and increments which public servants will receive regardless of the recommendations made in today’s report,” he said.
“Chambers Ireland questions the Commissions analysis of the value of public service pensions at 12% given that Department of Finance itself calculated that a pensionable public service salary of €186,000 was equivalent to a non-pensionable salary of €500,000 a year,” he concluded.
