Chambers Ireland
On the Departure of An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern

Chambers Ireland President David Pierce today (06/05/08) paid tribute to Bertie Ahern T.D. ahead of his final day in office as Taoiseach. “I had the pleasure of accompanying An Taoiseach overseas on Trade Missions, and was always struck by his passion and energy for promoting Ireland as a world-class destination for investment. He was an outstanding statesman who represented Ireland on the international stage ardently,” Pierce said.

“Through his historic contribution in helping to bring about peace in Northern Ireland, he has strengthened our relationship with the United Kingdom. His skilful leadership during this time was indispensible and one need only glimpse at some of the tributes paid by international dignitaries to get a sense of how important he was as an ambassador for Ireland.”

“During his time as Taoiseach, he presided over the unprecedented growth of the Irish economy, a time which saw unemployment rates drop to an historic low and the reversal of the emigration trend. No longer is Ireland a country where the skilled must leave in order to secure employment, rather it is the destination of choice for some of the world’s most talented workers.”

“Bertie Ahern has done exceptional work for the country both in terms of his pivotal role in securing the Good Friday Agreement and in making Ireland the successful, competitive economy that we now are,” Pierce concluded.
